Before you get your leggings on and shift into a downward facing dog to meditate on this thought of becoming a Health Coach (after sipping a spirulina smoothie, of course) I want you to stop and think about if this is really for you.
In my experience, there are 3 things you need to already have in order to become a thriving and successful Health Coach.
- A passion for living a life that is truly thriving around eating, thinking and living in a way that nourishes your body, mind and spirit.
- The natural ability to coach. This may be manifesting in friends constantly asking for advice, people wanting your opinion on things and feeling like you’re coaching in your life anyway!
- Determination to change your life so you can create one that aligns with your truest values.
Don’t have these? That’s ok, read on anyway and see what happens. You might notice it’s just your BS stories popping up again to stop you from doing something you’ve always wanted to do.
But I want to share with you the steps and mistakes I took and experienced over my journey to becoming the coach I am today. If that’s ok with you, keep reading!
I STARTED OFF WITH A DEEP DESIRE TO IMPROVE MY HEALTH AND THE HEALTH OF MY FAMILY
It was definitely the catalyst in getting me to study. My incredible migraines and sugar addiction was something I did not want to pass down to my girls and I needed to take the pressure off Hugh and my mum who had to ‘save me’ each time I was struck down with the awful squiggly lines in my vision.
I actually remember the moment I decided I needed to do this as a career. And I don’t exaggerate when I say NEEDED! I had to do this as much as I needed to breath. It was important and it was necessary.
Which brings me to a point that comes up with coaches -
CAN I MAKE TRUCK LOADS OF MONEY DOING THIS?
Well, lets see. If you’re willing to take on LOTS of clients, you could create a pretty big income.
What would that look like? Say you’re willing to work 40 hours a week with clients, that would mean 40 clients paying around $100 per session. That’s $4,000 per week and over $200,000 per year! Woo hoo, celebrate… but wait. That also doesn’t include working on your website, blogging, marketing for clients, the work between that you do for them, admin, accounts… Hmmm. That seems like a pretty full on ‘career’ right? Not much time for several 20 minute meditation sessions a day.
So there are two things - you can create different offerings such as online programs, books and ebooks, products, events and as much as your imagination will cover. And you can join the Gratitude Gang and create a second complimentary income stream from helping more people with their health and heart based wealth.
You want to be realistic about what time you can give to it and what you’re needing income wise. I was lucky to begin with that I had a husband who made a steady income and a baby that slept lots. I was able to start slow with a few clients and build it up to what it is today. Think about what it could be for your future and the hustle and alignment you’re wanting to put into it right now!
And once you’ve decided on your path…
CHOOSE A REPUTABLE COURSE TO STUDY FOR YOUR CERTIFICATION
Depending on what you want out of a Health Coach Training Program, you can choose one that focuses just on food OR you can go with the worlds largest nutrition school - the Institute for Integrative Nutrition where I studied and learnt not only about food and nourishment but also about how to be well in your mind, body, lifestyle and relationships.
This was really important to me. So important that I put my entire mat leave cheque into the course because it resonated so strongly with me. I didn’t want to just learn how much potassium was in a banana. I wanted to learn why meditation was important, how I could supercharge my relationship with my husband and help others to do the same and also get the business training and marketing skills I would need to turn this into an incredible business!
And once you’ve finished with that…
RUN A BUSINESS WITH HEART.
This means collaborating authentically with other incredible businesses, marketing truely to the people you really want to help and also nurturing and loving on yourself as you journey into a new world or career.
And the best thing I did for my business and wellbeing at the beginning was hiring a coach. I did this both so I could make sure I was prioritising my own health and also so I could have support and guidance from someone who had been through it before me.
This has now lead me in the last 1 months to focus also on coaching new coaches and loving online business builders. I absolutely adore watching girls go from not knowing where to start to launching their brand to the world with total confidence.
So my health obsessed friend… Is Health Coaching something you could do and love? Are you passionate about wellness and want to dive into a career where you get to help others?
Great, what are you waiting for?
